Just like our physical health, our mental health too needs attention, care and upkeep. There are times in our lives such as pregnancy, birth and motherhood where this attention slips from ourselves to what we need to do as mothers. Despite all my lifestyle changes, theoretical understanding on the mental health issues I was not immune. None of us are.

In the Autumn of 2017 I was invited to a meeting at The House of Commons to share my experiences as a new mum who suffered from antenatal and postnatal mental health issues. However, I wondered if it would be more powerful to take a few stories with me rather than just my own personal experience. So, I put out a quick survey on our small community of MummyYoga attendees to garner some points of view on the scale of the problem. What I had not anticipated was the avalanche of responses within hours and within 3 days we had over 300 responses to our survey. Some stories so heart wrenching that it was impossible now for me to sit back and do nothing.

Almost 80% of you who participated in our survey said they could benefit from Mental Health Support!

…This was the beginning of #MMhM Project.

One of the main initiatives of the project is our Hyper Local Wellness Walks.

Started with just one small Chapter in 2017 at Kingsway by a local MummyYoga attendee Amy Fox.

The walks relaunched in September 2020 in Kingsway and Upton and have since been supercharged by Nicola Haigh who has coordinated the walks on a voluntary basis whilst on maternity leave from her job at StoryHouse.

Since September we now have over 10 HyperLocal Chapters!

In addition to Upton and Kingsway, the walks are now also happening in Ellesmere Port, Handbridge and the Garden Quarter by a team of amazing volunteers who are all also on maternity leave. Three more walks also known as chapters have launched in Hoole, Tarvin and Huntington/Saighton, Blacon and we are continuing to add more chapters as more of you step forward to lead them.

These walks are completely free to attend and are run by volunteers.

New mum and walk attendee Charlie says, I love chatting to the other mums only to find out that we are all going through the same things. It is especially important during Covid as its one of the only opportunities I have had to connect with other new mums”

These walks are designed to be in every small neighbourhood so that parents who don’t or can’t drive or get on the bus can access them. They also help in creating deep friendships who live near each other. Our hope is that after this whole virus situation is behind us, we can still enjoy the friendships that these hard times facilitated.

If you would like to come along to one of the walks then please find your nearest Hyper Local Chapter and book your space here –

If you would like to become our walk leader in your neighbourhood, please do get in touch. We provide all the support and training needed to make your local chapter a fulfilling volunteering experience.
